LEAP DAY 2008

... Oh gee, an extra day in February! While I could argue that an extra day in June would be more welcome, there is something to be said for a day that only comes around once every four years. "He is a little boy of five..." and so forth. What will you do with an extra day this year? Where were you last Leap day? What will you be doing next Leap day? Gone are the days when I could give you all the Day Off (remember?) but do something memorable anyway!

Random Blurbs. Summer Job!!

So I have never been this tired. I figure that none of you has anything better to do than sit here and read this post, and considering I'm on four hours of sleep this could get pretty interesting/incoherant.

First off, I have the most wacked out schedule ever. If I didn't have work-study, I would get all my homework done on time every time. Summa, I would be a perfect student. As it is, finding time to replace the 10 hours a week that I work is very difficult. Last semester it meant not doing as well as I should, so this semester I chose doing all of my homework. Hence my insane schedule.

You know how most college students go to bed around 1 or 2:00 AM? I do that too, but then I get up around five thirty, five forty AM. I get my adrenaline pumping from Monday's seminar and my energy carries over to Wednesday night, but by Thursday morning I feel like death and Friday is just an endurance contest. I fix it by getting plenty of sleep over the weekend and the cycle begins again Monday morning.

Hokay. So I also have a summer job! I will be working at HoneyRock for three months (this makes seven consecutive years I've been to the North Woods) and then, if everything works out....

I'M GOING TO ANNAPOLIS!!

How awesome is that? I, who have never before lived in a city, might get to live 60 miles from Washington, right upriver from the Naval Academy (against whom St. John's competes in croquet), and smack dab on the Potomac? Annapolis is SWEET. The library has more than 100,000 volumes, and an entire separate library...all for music! (classical music, of course) It is absolutely perfect.

And now it is time for the weekend. Hoorays!

Choices Choices

So I have two jobs lined up for me this summer. I suppose I should be grateful. After all, both will pay fairly well and enable me to get ahead on my next ream of Johnnie payments in '08/09. But choosing really sucks.

Job I is working as a wrangler (horse person) at HoneyRock Camp from May through August.

Job II is working at Buildings and Grounds (the dirty work place) at St. John's College in Santa Fe from May through August.

Neither of these jobs are new; I've been to HoneyRock every summer for the past six years, and I've worked at B & G for the past six months. Ideally I would get a job doing something brand new, terribly exciting, and wonderfully profitable: all in a completely different part of the country!! This dream does not mesh well with reality.

I would make $6.50/hour and get around 40 hours a week as a wrangler in Wisconsin, bringing my earnings to $1600-$2000, pessimistically/optimistically speaking. In contrast, I would make $9.50/hour at B&G and get 40 hours a week, putting my earnings at approximately $2200. (Santa Fe is a very expensive place to live)

HoneyRock is my favorite place in the whole world outside of St. John's, but I could really use the extra $200. Money or a wonderful summer in every sense of the word?

Ugh. I hate choices like this.

February Thoughts for Birthday People

"First you forget names, then you forget faces. Next you forget to pull your zipper up and finally, you forget to pull it down." --George Burns
See? Things aren't so bad yet.

"From birth to age eighteen a girl needs good parents, from eighteen to thirty-five she needs good looks, from thirty-five to fifty-five she needs a good personality. From fifty-five on, she needs good cash."
~ Sophie Tucker
I am getting awfully close to that last category....

"Looking fifty is great--if you're sixty."- Joan Rivers

"At 20 years of age the will reigns; at 30 the wit; and at 40 the judgment."- Ben Franklin

"As you get older three things happen. The first is your memory goes, and I can't remember the other two... -- Sir Norman Wisdom "

"The secret of staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age." -- Lucille Ball (Uncommon Scold, 1989, by A. Adams)

"You know you are getting old when the candles cost more than the cake." -- Bob Hope

"When our memories outweigh our dreams, we have grown old. "
Surprisingly enough, this one was attributed to Bill Clinton. We don't want to know what he dreams about, but the thought is nice.... keep dreaming!

Surviving February

1. Ignore the thermometer. Yes, I know it is four degrees below zero. And yes, I am aware that there are six inches of snow on the ground. And yes, I also realize that there is no hope of any improvement in the near future. Just don't look. And don't tell.

2. Celebrate birthdays early and often. Becca, yours is up next! hip, hip hooray. Just wait 'til you see what is coming your way. OOOh lah lah. And somebody, sometime is turning.... dare we say it? Nifty, nifty, look who's FIFTY!!!!! How much cake can we eat in one week?

3. Do something unexpected. A certain person who shall remain nameless threw the usual restraint and obedience to schedule out the window in between snow storms and took prime morning time on a school day with a school-aged teen to go shopping. No, we don't mean groceries, we mean the clearance racks at Bergner's. And YES, it was educational. How many eighth-graders can accurately calculate the sale price of an item marked down 70% off the lowest marked price?

4. Find something to laugh at. A cartoon, a funny book, a movie. There's a good reason to watch Groundhog Day once a year. Find a joke and post it on the blog for all to enjoy!

I love you all.... you are worth surviving February for!

just an update

I haven't been on the blog in a while so I thought I'd just gab a bit about what's been going on here lately.

Nate's been drowning in school work pretty much since we got back from Illinois. I guess he was even before then, but you get the point. He's not liking the Pashtu course much. I don't think he likes his teacher at all, or the language, or their entire culture.

Caedmon has been equally busy but having much more fun. It feels like we are having more and more tantrums, but I suppose that's all part of being a little boy. He currently has an obsession with "birdies." It started with just pointing them out and saying "tweet tweet" when we were going for walks, then chasing pigeons, then this afternoon I took him down the park in Wiesbaden to see the ducks. I think he juts likes that they come so close to him. I'm going to have to make another trip up to the animal park this weekend.

In the meantime I've started my first course in the direction of a Web Publishing Certificate. It seems easy so far, so I went ahead and registered for another starting in March. Caedmon and I went to Frankfurt yesterday with a friend of mine. I generally don't like to go to the major metroplitan areas of Germany, but it was more fun than I thought it would be. I've also gotten a couple chances to escape for dinner and trips to the pool baby-free (motsly because a friend of mine was moving away and we had several "last goodbyes"). Other than that its mostly just been your every day mom-duties for me.

And I guess that leaves Lola. She tolerates Caedmon the best she can and has started putting her weight back on.

And with that I have to go, Caedmon is trying to climb chairs and that has not gone well for him this afternoon....

Total Lunar Eclipse

So there will be a total lunar eclipse on 20 February at 20:00 Mountain Time. Luna will be totally obscured for about two hours. This is AWESOME! At 7300 feet, the air is clean and cold and allows for near-perfect viewing conditions. Everyone should see this! (If you live in Chicago I feel sorry for you) It's going to be so sweet.

How can you go wrong with that?
